BMW N45 timing chains

If you own a BMW 116i, BMW 316i, BMW 316ti made between 2004 and 2009, your car will probably have an N45 engine. Unfortunately these engines can suffer from worn or stretched timing chains. Chain replacement involves specialist knowledge and many special tools, which many garages may not want to commit to for one repair job.

Chain replacement

When a timing chain problem has been identified, the chain must be replaced along with the tensioner. The plastic chain guides are not normally excessively worn but we can replace these as well if necessary. This is a complex engine, with balance shafts and adjustable valve timing on inlet and exhaust camshafts. OVS can now offer chain replacement for considerably less than the BMW main dealer. Please contact us for further information.

On the 1- and 3- series models we can also carry out routine servicing, diagnostics, brake pad replacement and battery replacement (believe it or not all of these jobs require a computer plug-in).

Area coverage

We normally offer a mobile service, but as this job needs to be completed in our workshops, we offer a free collection and delivery service if the car is still driveable, if not we can recover at extra cost. We advise recovery is the best way in most instances so as to limit further damage to the engine.

Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Wadhurst, Lamberhurst, Crowborough, Sevenoaks, Westerham, Oxted, Edenbridge, Paddock Wood, Hildenborough, Maidstone, Hawkhurst, Cranbrook, Goudhurst, Heathfield, Maresfield, Uckfield, and other areas of Kent, East Sussex, Surrey and sometimes Essex and London.

Preventative maintenance

Always have the car serviced regularly using parts and fluids designed for your vehicle. Chain wear is greater at low engine speeds (at high engine speeds the oscillations caused by the valve springs are more effectively damped out by the rotating mass) so don't be tempted to change gear too early.
